Detroit-area couple's stone house is artistry in motion - The Olympian

The only constant about Evan Derian and Tamela Ekstrom-Derian's funky stone house in Ferndale is that the eclectic decor keeps changing. Ekstrom-Derian, owner of Haven Real Estate + Design, is always changing it up - from moving paintings to different rooms to rearranging furniture. Scanning the living room, "this room is already under mental re-design," says Derian, a graphic designer and comic book artist, referring to his wife. Their 1928 eclectic three-bedroom house oozes style, The Detroit News (http://detne. ws/203N7B6 ) reported. From Ekstrom-Derian's hand-painted pixelated art on the walls to the vintage comic book pages from Derian's collection, their home meshes both their styles, while creating a style all its own. And where the decor really stands out is in the details. Ekstrom-Derian has a knack for styling, creating unique vignettes in nearly every room - from the Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera dolls in a tiny glass bowl in the living room to a small framed drawing of Derian's comic book pseudonym for his wife, Ginger Goldvine (her first pet's name plus the first street she lived on). "I like to balance things," says Ekstrom-Derian. "And I usually pick certain colors. I always do a neutral backdrop, but with a pop of color. Derian, meanwhile, has learned to embrace his spouse's constantly changing style. He says he was more of a vintage, Gothic person before he and Ekstrom-Derian married in 2013, but now she's helped him learn to appreciate other styles, especially mid-century modern. "I've actually kind of fallen in love with that," says Derian. "We like to mix things and to play with it. ". Ekstrom-Derian, meanwhile, says it was important to her to incorporate Derian's style and work throughout the decor of their 1,425-square-foot three-bedroom house (there's another 1,000 square feet in the finished basement, where the couple stays when they rent the first floor on Airbnb). Framed vintage Spider-Man comic book covers add a touch of color and pop art to the dining room. A rack of Derian's comic book series, "Miserable Americans," stands in the library. "That was a really important thing to me" to bring in Derian's style, says Ekstrom-Derian. Derian and Ekstrom-Derian grew up 10 houses away from each other in Farmington Hills. But after graduation, Derian. Source: www.theolympian.com

CEAT's move to mobile labs difficult, costly for students - Daily O'Collegian

Several College of Engineering, Architecture and Technology seniors and graduate students are irate after five computer labs in Cordell and Engineering North closed permanently, forcing students into overcrowded, under-equipped labs across campus, said Wendy Ward-Sullivan, an electrical engineering senior. George Douglas, manager of CEAT Information Technology Services, said the college is abandoning stationary computers in place of student-supplied laptops to make the program more mobile. “I think the understanding is three years ago, every freshman coming in should come in with a laptop,” Douglas said. “So we are moving from fixed computers to mobile computers. This is the fourth year of that program, so almost everybody up to the senior level will not have it, but everybody else should have a laptop. The situation is fine for underclassmen, but for electrical and mechanical engineering seniors such as Ward-Sullivan and Jordan Stuckwish, the announcement was out of nowhere, they said. Douglas said students were informed of the closings, but both Ward-Sullivan and Stuckwish said they had no idea they would return from winter break to find their labs locked with nothing in them besides tables and chairs. The decision came directly from CEAT dean Paul Tikalsky, which Douglas said caught him off guard. “It’s unfortunate that not everybody was brought up to the level at the same time,” Douglas said. “It was a little surprise for us because students are coming back and they’re coming back to a complete change. CEAT is doing what it can to inform students, but Douglas said student council can help relay the message to reach more students. Ward-Sullivan said the communication wasn’t enough. She said seniors, non-traditional students and graduate students are forced to purchase expensive, vital software some computers can’t handle. Without the software, Ward-Sullivan said a diploma is out the window. “We have classes just based on the software,” Ward-Sullivan said. The software’s availability is limited, and it’s distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Ward-Sullivan said the system leaves students scrambling and out of money. Douglas said the transition is a work in progress. “It’s still in the works,” Douglas said. Source: www.ocolly.com

10 Unexpected Ways Lighting Can Enhance Your Decor - StyleCaster

Add a touch of brassy detail to a minimal room with these wall sconces. Bedside lamps honestly will make you feel like a grown up. They're beautiful additions to a bed vignette and they make going to bed fun because you can hang out and read, roll over, turn off the light and go to sleep without getting back out of bed. It's the small things. This beach house's furniture was all chosen to match the open airy beach backdrop seen from every window in the house. The floor and table lamps let the client turn off the amazing overhead chandelier when he wants more intimate lighting. Pro tip: Interesting lighting (like this chandelier) draws the eye upwards, which will make rooms feel bigger and ceilings seem higher. Lighting a room well is a delicate process. Should we get floor lamps. Should we replace the ceiling fixture that came with the living room. How do we create mood lighting. What is mood lighting. What’s the point in designing a space if you can’t properly see it. What’s the point in professionally designing a space if the “mood lighting” makes you feel too moody.
