A 'Design Star' offers advice on flexible family living - Washington Post
Go round and heavy for a child-friendly coffee table: You don’t want the kids to be able to knock it over. “I have a huge pouf in our family room, which my kids love to crawl all over,” Henderson wrote. “Target, Crate and Barrel, West Elm and Serena and Lily all have good, round, heavy coffee tables. ” She recommends a drum shape. Think about using indestructible materials: unfinished (rustic) wood, leather, Sunbrella or a big patterned fabric to hide yogurt finger stains that will surely arise. A shared color palette can help blend households: Compromise can be difficult when it comes to your home, but it will help to choose a shared color palette with cool and warm tones that you both like. Cooler tones — gray, blue or green — keep it looking fresh and modern, and warmer tones — wood, leather or creams — help it feel inviting. Keep basic furniture pieces simple so most of your accessories can work with them. Each of you can nix a piece from the other that you can’t live with, and you each get to keep a piece you love. If you love a feminine, Victorian-style chair but your partner has more masculine tastes, think about reupholstering it in a simple gray linen. But the more you both can be part of the process, the more you will both love it and want it to represent both of your styles. [ An expert answers five of the most common organizing questions ]. Sharing an office. Keep it simple: The key to visual sanity is simple, basic pieces of furniture that correspond with each other. Pick either two matching office desks or one big table. Ikea sells long desks that two people can work on, or consider a small-scale dining table. An L-shaped desk gives each person their own space, but it looks clean and simple. Remember one rule for downsizing: When downsizing, you want to look at each piece and make sure it fits into two of these three categories: beautiful, sentimental or functional. If it fits all three then you have yourself a wonderful piece. And if it doesn’t fit into any, then “donate that sucker. Source: www.washingtonpost.com
Duck hunter dies in canoe accident near Cheney Lake - KSN-TV
WICHITA, Kansas – Thirty-year-old Aaron Travis of Wichita died Sunday when his boat overturned during a duck hunt in western Sedgwick County. Aaron’s father-in-law, Alan Schumacher, tells KSN news that Aaron went hunting with a good friend early Sunday morning. After shooting ducks, Aaron and a friend went out in a canoe to retrieve the birds they had shot. The canoe capsized and Aaron did not make it back to shore. “He was having trouble and so Justin went over and tried to help him and Aaron told him to get away. He’ll make it. So Justin swam to the shore. By the time he turned around, Aaron was not behind him,” Schumacher said. Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Lt. Lin Dehning says the incident happened about 8:15 a. m. at a private pond in the 300 block of N. 391st west at Fidelity Farms. Alan says Aaron and his wife are expecting their first child in the spring. “Little Summer lost her daddy today,” Schumacher said. “When he found out they were pregnant after all this time, he admitted to Amber that his hunting days were over. So he’s going to get all those out of the way because once Summer’s here, he’s going to be the best daddy anybody’s ever seen. Schumacher and other family members gathered Sunday to grieve together. He said he is grateful to have recently seen his son-in-law. “Yesterday they were over, they spent the entire day together. Just the two of them, but stopped over in between shopping for nursery furniture for their upcoming baby’s arrival,” Schumacher said. As for Aaron’s wife, she’s trying to make sense of it all, surrounded by family. Summer’s due May the 24th,”. Summer, the little girl the couple was looking forward to seeing the first time in the spring, will now bring joy to the rest of the family. “They were very excited about their lives together. The one blessing that we’ve got is Aaron lives on in Summer,” said Schumacher. The family set up a go-fund-me account for the baby’s education at https://www. Travis’ body was found at 9:30 a. m. Sunday morning. No one else was injured in the accident. Source: ksn.com
