Charlotte Mothers of Multiples supports families with twins, triplets and beyond - Charlotte Observer

With the highly anticipated annual Charlotte Mothers of Multiples (CMOMs) consignemnt sale this weekend, we thought we’d check in with Lindsay Wilson, president of CMOMs- Charlotte since 2012 and get her take on why this organization makes being a mom to twins , triplets and quadruplets so much better. Through its focus on providing support, building friendships, and serving the community, CMOMs provides valuable support services to families with multiple birth children in order to help them thrive, not just survive, in their efforts to care for their multiple birth children. They currently serve over 600 members in the greater Charlotte area, one of the largest support groups for parents of multiples in the nation. How did you get involved with CMOMS. Wilson: I joined CMOMs when I found out I was pregnant with my twins. Once I became a member, I saw how important it was to have the support of other moms that know exactly what you are going through. It became my mission to make sure that other MOMs were supported just as I was. What are some of the biggest challenges you faced as a new mom with twins. Wilson: Some of the biggest challenges revolve around the fact that newborn twins constantly need your attention, and being one person, you can't do it all at one time. It is so wonderful to have a group of moms to lean on that knew exactly what you are going through. The minute I joined CMOMs, I felt immediately welcomed and once my twins arrived, I had a whole group of CMOMs to help me through each stage. After my babies were born, I became a stay at home mom, which was extremely difficult for me as I was used to being around people all of the time. CMOMs became my way of taking care of myself. It gave me something that was so much bigger than me to be a part of. Q. Any words of advice for other moms of multiples. Wilson: When you find a mothers of multiples group, jump in with two feet. It's such a unique experience to be around other moms and families that really understand the ins and outs of what you have and will go through. You will have so many people offering to help you along the way, accept as much as you are able, and enjoy. Source: www.charlotteobserver.com

Designing a gender neutral nursery without taking out a loan - BabyCenter (blog)

Designing a gender neutral nursery can be tricky — and expensive, since gender neutral products are often on the pricey side. But whether you’re going gender neutral because you’re not finding out the sex of your baby beforehand or because you aren’t a big fan of decking out a room in wall-to-wall pink or blue, there are plenty of ways to give your nursery personality while keeping your budget in check. For instance, you can find plenty of affordable, stylish products from Walmart that are just as good-looking as expensive designer rivals. Take a peek at some of my favorites, ( all available at Walmart ), that will help you create the gender neutral nursery of your dreams. Mixing finishes: Combining different crib finishes is a great gender neutral option that’s currently on-trend. I love how this modern crib is a combination of classic white with a touch of darker wood in the drawer. Having both finishes on your crib also allows you to pull in multiple finishes in other nursery furniture. ( Baby Mod ParkLane Convertible 3-in-1 Wood Veneer Contemporary Crib , Walmart, $229. 98). 2. Starting big: It’s always a smart plan to choose the big pieces in your nursery first, so I headed to gliders next. Gliders and nursery rocking chairs have come such a long way in recent years, with cool, modern silhouettes in neutral fabrics that work for boys and girls. ( Modern Rocker with Straight Armrests and Foot Stool in Gray, Walmart, $239. 98). 3. Hit the floor: I ditched the baby department for a rug that would be a good fit for a gender neutral nursery: this bold black-and-white striped number that goes with everything and makes a stylish statement. If you decided later you wanted to make your nursery look more “boy” or “girl,” this rug could go either way. ( Meticulously Woven Hart Casual Striped Area Rug , Walmart, $23. 50-190. 66). 4. Pops of color: Use bedding to add color — it’s typically inexpensive, and you can swap it out as your tastes change and your baby grows. Green is always a nice option, and mixes well with pink if you decide to add traditionally feminine elements, as well as with navy if you want to go preppy/nautical/masculine. ( Bacati MixNMatch Green Pin Dots Fitted Crib Sheet , Walmart, $29. 99 for a 2-pack). Source: blogs.babycenter.com

The Bouvier Affair - The New Yorker

The Geneva Freeport, which may be the world’s most valuable storage facility, consists of seven beige warehouses and a large grain silo in La Praille, an industrial zone a short tram ride from the city’s lakeside panorama of banks and expensive hotels. One recent morning, rain was falling on the chain-link fence that runs through the property, and snow was visible on the mountains to the south. Iris scanners, magnetic locks, and a security system known as Cerberus guard the freeport’s storerooms, whose contents are said to be insured for a hundred billion dollars, but the facility retains a blue-collar feel. Men stood around in aprons and smoked. Everything about the place tells you to look the other way. The freeport began, in 1888, as a group of sheds near the waterfront. It was one of countless similar spaces around the world, where customs authorities allow duties and taxes to be suspended until goods reach their final destination. In time, however, the Geneva Freeport became legendary. It grew very large, and its official status—the freeport is eighty-six per cent owned by the local government—and kinship with the opaque traditions of Swiss banking made it a storage facility for the international élite. Under the freeport’s rules, objects could remain in untaxed limbo, in theory, forever. A generation ago, these goods were cars, wine, and gold. More recently, they have been works of art. Yves Bouvier was among the first to see the potential of the freeport as an adjunct to the art market. A blond, compact man of fifty-two, Bouvier is the owner of Natural Le Coultre, a moving and storage company and the largest tenant in the complex. For more than a hundred years, the firm shipped everything from citrus fruit to industrial machinery. during the First World War, Natural Le Coultre supplied prisoners of war with Red Cross food parcels. Since 1997, however, when Bouvier took over the firm from his father, it has handled only paintings and sculpture. Bouvier refurbished the company’s premises at the freeport, which include two showrooms, and encouraged a framer to open a workshop in the building. Since 2013, Natural Le Coultre has rented more than twenty thousand square metres in storage space and has had well over a million objects in its care. Every item passes through a single packing room, where it is unwrapped, photographed, and studied for damage. Source: www.newyorker.com
