The all-American nursery: 35+ baby products made in the USA - BabyCenter (blog)
Millions of Americans buy local at the grocery store, selecting domestically grown produce instead of peaches from Chile and bananas from Mexico. So why does all that fly out the window when we’re shopping for baby products. Almost 8 in 10 Americans would prefer to buy U. S. -made products , Consumer Reports found in a recent survey, and over 60 percent would be willing to pay 10 percent more for homegrown items. So why are U. S. -made baby goods so hard to find at big-box department stores and baby specialty markets. It’s bewildering enough to try to pick out a car seat from a long row of confusingly named seats with an alphabet of meaningless acronyms , and a forest of safety claims to hack your way through — now you want us to pore over the box looking for the “Made in USA” label, too. But if the foreign-made stroller, bottle, or play yard is safe and well-made, why does it matter. 1) Many parents feel more comfortable buying and using products that are made under U. S. safety standards, which are thorough and well-policed. They may have seen recalls of foreign-made products which were shoddily made or had coatings that contained unacceptable levels of lead, arsenic, or cadmium. 2) Buying U. S. -made products supports domestic manufacturing, and the American people who make their living making the things we want to buy. America’s once-mighty manufacturing sector is making a bit of a comeback after huge losses in the last three decades — the Department of Commerce reports that U. S. manufacturing output grew by 45 percent between 2010 and 2014, partially offsetting enormous losses during the recession of 2008-2009. 3) Buying domestically saves on the petroleum used and pollution caused by overseas shipping. 4) Spending domestically means voting for fair working conditions, rather than supporting questionable or inhumane working conditions overseas. Here’s the hard part: Many American-made goods are more expensive. This can be a pretty bitter pill to swallow at a time when you’re outfitting an entire nursery (read: spending hundreds or thousands of dollars at once), as well as nervously thinking of mouths that need feeding and college funds that need funding. There are bargains to be found domestically — brands like Leachco, Prince Lionheart, Safety 1st, Cosco, Primo, Evenflo, and Eddie Bauer offer American-made products at very. More infants die every year in cribs than from any other nursery product. In the past 20 years, 1,100 children have died from crib-related injuries. More than 12,200 children were rushed to emergency rooms with injuries in 2011. Crib recalls began to rise in 2005. Since 2007, more than 9 million cribs have been recalled. Cribs manufactured after June 28, 2011, are required to meet a stricter crib safety standard and undergo more vigorous testing. Despite the recall in 2010, babies are still being injured or killed by the use of this product. The infant recliner was initially recalled after 22 reports of injury and one infant death. Since the initial recall, five more children have died and at least 92 reports of injury have been received. Magnetix building sets. The tiny magnets in these toys can fall out and be ingested. When more than one is swallowed, they may be drawn together inside the body, causing intestinal perforation, infection and potentially fatal injuries. Some Magnetix sets were recalled, but the toy still remains in stores. The company added a warning label and made some manufacturing changes. High-powered magnets (Buckyballs & Magnicube). In September 2014, the Consumer Product Safety Commission banned the sale of these dangerous magnets. These magnets are small balls or cubes that are connected to form different shapes. CPSC recognized this product caused the death of one child in 2013 and has sent at least 2,900 children to the emergency room from 2009 to 2013. 5. Infantino infant carrier.
