eter and Ellie Yang, by all outward appearances, are living the Beijing dream. They have a condo in an up-and-coming area, a white Honda that Peter keeps immaculate and a rambunctious one-year-old son, Xiongxiong. They wear brand-name jeans and own separate iPhone 6s. On holidays, they go to Sanya — "China's Hawaii" — as well as Hong Kong and Japan. It's enough to make them the envy of many. But when Ellie found out she was pregnant in 2014, Peter said he wanted to have their second child in America. "It's for him to get a good education," Peter says. "But it's also for us — to find business opportunities and to make friends. Chinese who do this tend to be well-connected. " Sidebar Peter began researching maternity hotels that operate within the underground birth tourism industry. He chatted with sales agents and scanned large photos on forums like LA Fat Dad, USA Baby DIY and America Baby Home. One option was staying in a single-family home, rented solely to birth tourists, but moving into a close-knit residential community as part of a rotating cast of pregnant Chinese felt risky. Renting an apartment in San Francisco, as some of their friends had done, was less expensive and lower profile, but Peter didn't know anyone there. At last he and Ellie agreed on a "middle of the road" option — a 16-room hotel in suburban Los Angeles for $20,000. At the end of October, Ellie and Peter — who asked to use pseudonyms — boarded a 10-hour flight from Beijing to have their second child. The decision had made Ellie uneasy from the start. It seemed potentially dangerous for the baby and expensive. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) had turned pregnant women away at West Coast airports. She finally consented, though — it was worth the risk to give their child a better education outside of China. By the time they got off the plane in Honolulu, which is thought to be an easier spot for birth tourists to enter, Ellie, seven months pregnant and showing, was in a state of intense anxiety. Online forums had advised wearing voluminous black dresses and holding a purse to block the belly, but at least one poster wrote this was exactly wrong: "Since there are so many pregnant women now, if they're all wearing the same thing, they know right away you're pregnant. " Ellie decided to wear. Source: www.rollingstone.com

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer sparks maternity leave debate among working moms as she announces she's expecting ... - New York Daily News

To maternity leave, or not to leave. That’s the mother of all questions for working women grappling with whether to take time off after having a baby — especially when their boss bounces back to work right after giving birth. Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has brought the eternal work/life struggle back into the spotlight after revealing Monday that she’s expecting twins in December, and plans on “taking limited time away and working throughout” her pregnancy. Although she doubled Yahoo’s paid maternity leave from eight weeks to 16 weeks in 2013, she took just two weeks off herself after having her first baby in 2012. This gives New York’s working mothers a pregnant pause. “It gives a false expectation of how a mom should balance work and life,” says Shaquanda Spivey, 36, who has a teenage son and another baby on the way. She plans to take full advantage of her eight-week maternity leave from Unilever, where she works as a buyer. “We want to be superwomen, we want to do it all, but then something is going to suffer,” she says. “I don’t want to worry about work two weeks after I give birth. I want to make sure that my baby is healthy. Recently Netflix got a lot of buzz for offering unlimited paid maternity leave, but you’ve got to be secure enough to take advantage of it — and many women aren’t. Karen Taylor Bass, 48, a mother of two from Valley Stream and the co-president of the Queens chapter of Mocha Moms, worries Mayer is setting a bad precedent. “You’re not going to take the full, max maternity leave, because you want to be competitive, you want to be reliable, and if your boss takes limited time, you feel guilt-ridden if you don’t do the same. As long as only 12% of Americans have access to paid parental leave, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, women are going to feel pressured to hop from the hospital bed back to their desks. Currently, 1 in 4 working women go back to work just 10 days after having a baby, making Mayer’s two weeks look downright leisurely. And although the policy Mayer instituted is generous, moms say it’s hard to do as she says, not as she does. Top aid Anne-Marie Slaughter urged Huma Abedin to begin her Christmas vacation a few days early in 2009 because, “a lot of folks who would like to take some time off with their family before. How Dolly Parton's Childhood Home Became the Dollywood Empire - Curbed National

"Is this the real house. " asks a woman as she shuffles through the cabin, eating barbecue off a red plastic plate. I'm standing in the replica of Dolly Parton's childhood home at the Dollywood theme park in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Visitors enter the cabin on the left, from a front porch hung with old oil lanterns, and exit to the right. A hallway several feet wide runs along the cabin's interior, and a wooden fence and glass wall separate visitors from the two-room home: you are both in the cabin and not in the cabin, surveying a recreation of the space where Dolly lived with her parents and eleven siblings. Several other people walk through the cabin, marveling at its size. One man laughs out loud. " How many people lived here. " he asks no one in particular. Lack and excess coexist uncomfortably at Dollywood , where the cabin represents one kind of "Tennessee Mountain Home," and the ever-expanding Dollywood brand another. Dollywood strives to give its visitors a sense that they are at home in the Smoky Mountains, but being at home is about luxury. Those who flock to Dollywood, Dollywood Splash Country, and Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction can stay at Dollywood Cabins, which come complete with bedside jacuzzis in the master suites, "picnic pavilions," swimming pools, and home theaters. And in late July, the latest addition to the Dollywood empire opened its doors: the DreamMore Resort. Like Dollywood Cabins, the resort is geared towards families—visitors are encouraged to "Make the Most of Family Time"—but it markets itself as opulent and grand. The replica cabin, by contrast, strives to give visitors a glimpse into Dolly's impoverished childhood, which underpins the park's nostalgic vision of Tennessee. A sign proclaims it "the original cabin," with its "original family treasures" that "still stands at its location on Locust Ridge. " This year— all year—Dollywood celebrates its 30th anniversary, an opportunity for this world of Appalachian replicas to insist that it is "original. " This word is emblazoned on anniversary signage throughout the park. The emphasis on originality relates to Dollywood's insistence on its all-American, down-home authenticity, and the fact that the cabin contains "original family treasures" owned by the Parton family makes it difficult to distinguish between the real and the fake.
