MUSC asked six noted and emerging photographers to focus on South Carolinians at work and play in the Lowcountry, Midlands, and the Upstate. 24 photographers were given full creative independence with their subject matter. Over 270 individuals in more than 40 cities and towns across the Palmetto State were photographed as a result of this project. 1737 Main St. 8:30 a. m. -5 p. m. Monday at McKissick Museum. Monday at City Art. Tommy Thompson has been painting, primarily in watercolors, since 1965. He has taught numerous classes and workshops in the greater Columbia metropolitan area since 1989. For the past 10 years, in addition to his watercolor landscapes, he has been concentrating on experimental acrylic painting on board and canvas. According to Thompson, the last several decades the advances in polymer science have had a dynamic effect on art materials. The advent of current acrylic paint and especially the acrylic mediums have opened many new avenues for individual expression. Now, the new acrylic mediums have allowed him to introduce another dimension to the paintings - texture and relief surface work. 1224 Lincoln St. (803)252-3613 , www. Baby, mom, dad, share birthday; 2000 tickets by trooper; fake kidnapping - Arizona Daily Star
The Associated Press. In this Feb. 1, 2016 photo, pianist Jane Hartman Irwin sits at a recently restored piano with an iPad displaying "Ben Bolt," said to be one of Abraham Lincoln's favorites while he was a lawyer, at Edwards Place in Springfield, Ill. The 180-year-old instrument, that’s believed to have been in the Springfield parlor where Lincoln courted and later married Mary Todd, will debut Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016 at Edwards Place _ the city’s oldest home that was owned by the husband of Mary Lincoln’s sister and a haunt of the future 16th president. (AP Photo/Seth Perlman). SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — The music score, displayed on an incongruous iPad, sits above the ivory keyboard of a piano that Abraham Lincoln likely heard. Jane Hartman Irwin, an accomplished pianist who's performed with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie to Tennessee Ernie Ford, rises after a run-through of "Ben Bolt," said to be one of Lincoln's favorites while he was a lawyer. "You've got to be gentle," Irwin said, looking as though she got caught touching something she shouldn't. Until last month, the 180-year-old instrument that's believed to have been in the Springfield parlor where Lincoln courted and later married Mary Todd hadn't been heard for decades. Persuaded enough of the Lincoln link, the Springfield Art Association raised $17,000 to restore it. It debuted Saturday night at the association's Edwards Place — the city's oldest home that was a haunt of the future 16th president. "What an amazing opportunity to hear the same music Lincoln enjoyed on the actual instrument," said Erika Holst, the association's collections curator. Holst acknowledged there's no "smoking gun" in the piano's provenance, nor is there record of the legendary storyteller waxing about the piano, even if its melodies underscored the wooing of his wife in the sitting room of Ninian Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth. That home no longer stands. But family history, news articles and other evidence is strong enough to warrant the investment, Holst said. Manufactured by E. N. Scherr of Philadelphia between 1835 and 1840, the square grand piano remained in the Edwards family for decades. In 1895, Frances Todd Wallace, another sister of Mary Lincoln, said in an interview that Lincoln "liked to hear the piano, and he liked to hear us sing. It was purchased by the state in the. Ivan the gorilla will return to Tacoma in statue form - The News Tribune
Ivan, who spent nearly three decades in a concrete and steel habitat at the B&I store in Tacoma, picks a Magnolia blossom on his first day in his new natural enclosure at Zoo Atlanta in March 1995. This photo is the basis for a larger than life statue that will be located near the entrance to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. Richards Studio Collection Series: D142671-4 (Unique: 30359) Date: 08-31-1964 Description: Burma and Ivan, two baby gorillas purchased by E. L. Irwin, the owner of the B & I Circus Store at 8012 South Tacoma Way, were photographed in August of 1964 shortly after they arrived in Tacoma from the Congo. Ivan, the male of the pair, resided off and on at the Irwin's home until his natural playfulness, curiosity and strength proved destructive. In 1967 he moved into the little gorilla house at the B & I that had been built for him, located between the pet shop and the clothing department. In 1994, the family of E. L. Irwin donated Ivan to the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. The zoo then arranged a permanent loan to Zoo Atlanta where it was felt that Ivan could best integrate into a social group. File Photo: Helen Johnston holds Ivan for a family photo with son Larry. The Johnston's , who owned a pet store at the B & I , opened their South Tacoma home to Ivan beginning in 1964 after the infant Western Lowland Gorrila was captured in what is the Democratic Republic of Congo today. For three years Larry Johnston and Ivan were best friends and the two "did everything together," including riding motorcycles and going on trips. In 1967 Ivan was moved to the B & I. The family decided that Ivan had grown to be too much to handle as evidenced by the wholesale destruction of all their homes' furniture. For teenager Larry Johnston, it wasn't a monkey but Ivan the Western Lowland Gorilla on his back as he tried to read the paper in this Johnston family photo from the mid-1960's. For three years Larry Johnston was like a big-brother to Ivan while he lived with the Rubin family in their South Tacoma home. The photo shows Johnston's father Ruben, who ran the pet store at the B & I , and would take Ivan to work with him every day , relaxing in a reclining chair that would later be destroyed by a young and powerful , gorilla with too much energy.
