Ghostly Port Gamble, the Kitsap town where history comes alive — literally - The News Tribune

It’s a dark and stormy night, and I’m sitting in the most haunted house in Washington’s most haunted town. There’s no heat, and I feel the cold seeping up through my bones. Scattered around me in the empty darkness are 10 other people armed with electro-magnetic sensors, paranormal apps and dowsing rods. We’re all silent, alert for a signal from one of the house’s original occupants. We’re partway into a three-hour Special Investigation (a. k. a. ghost hunt) of the Walker-Ames house in Port Gamble, and so far I haven’t felt, seen or heard anything non-living. But that doesn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying the whole experience of exploring ghostly Port Gamble on a dismal rainy afternoon. A HAUNTED TOWN On the way to nowhere, tucked into a corner of the Kitsap Peninsula and quiet as a cemetery, Port Gamble already seems rather ghostly even as you drive in off state Route 104. It’s a company town, built in 1852 by Pope and Talbot for workers in the lumber mill that was America’s longest running until it closed in 1995. Still entirely owned by a spinoff company, Pope Resources, and now kept alive as a tourist town, it’s weirdly perfect in its impeccably quaint New England style, brought from Maine by the company’s founders. Clapboard-and-gable buildings in peach, sage, brown or powder blue are uniformly trimmed in white, with black edges around each historic windowpane. It’s like a movie set waiting for actors. Quiet streets run the small circle around a central village green. On one side are the misty waters of the Hood Canal and Port Gamble Bay. behind the town loom tangled forests that are gradually being bought back from Pope Resources by community groups for wildlife habitat and recreation. But apart from the main street, there’s an absence of people — living ones, that is. Just 85 folks still live in Port Gamble, commuting to Seattle or nearby towns, and as I ambled around on a dark November afternoon, I saw no one. There are signs of modern life — cars, basketball hoops, lights. But the silence is palpable, and it’s deliciously easy to feel spooked. Back along the highway from the main street, St. Paul’s church looms sternly among historic homes, its gray New England spire pointing into a gunmetal sky. Beyond a path marked with giant rusted chains and stumps cast off from the mill, the forest lurks, all shadowy moss and. Source: www.thenewstribune.com

Fire guts R.I. apartment building; no injuries reported - Quad-Cities Online

No one was injured. Fire officials were unsure of the total numbers of residents. Standing on a corner a block away, one of them, Lakeesha Davis, 35, wiped away a tear. Still wearing a hairnet, she said she had been at work when she received a call from her brother that the building where she lived with her mother and two children -- soon to be three -- was on fire. Just weeks away from her due date, the baby clothes had been bought, the nursery prepared, Ms. Davis's sister, Rochelle Davis, 42, said. Rochelle Davis said she had left home briefly Thursday morning to pay a bill and returned to "this," she said, gesturing towards the plumes of smoke pouring from the residence. Rock Island Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey said his department was called at 11:24 a. m. and was aided by crews from the Rock Island Arsenal Fire Department. About 20 to 25 minutes after arriving on scene, he said firefighters using hand hoses were forced to evacuate the second floor, but continued fighting the fire from outside. Columns of dark gray smoke, coupled with gusty winds, clouded visibility and caused many neighbors who clustered outside to cover eyes and mouths. Just before noon, Arsenal fire officials stood in a "cherry picker" training hoses at the third floor, the water sending pieces of siding and roof through the air. About 10 minutes later, the majority of the roof was reduced to a charred hole. About an hour after crews arrived on scene, most of the flames were out, though smoke continued to pour from the roofless house. Rochelle Davis stood, shaking her head in shock. Having hung back from the scene, she sighed and said, "Might as well face it. ". A woman who identified herself only as Anna, from the nearby St Joseph the Worker House, had walked down to the scene just to watch, but after learning the Davis family was without coats, promptly returned with an armful of blankets. "They're watching their house burn down," she said, as the family moved in to get a closer look at the scene. The cause of the fire will be under investigation, Assistant Chief Yerkey said. Due to the extent of the damage, the house was considered unlivable, and the Davis family said they would stay with family and friends for the time being. "I just am glad everybody got out okay, because this was a. Source: www.qconline.com

STROLLING around the European Parliament in Brussels recently Charlemagne asked his companion, an MEP’s assistant, if the success of anti-European parties in last May’s elections had changed the feel of the place. “Well, for one thing you see posters like that,” she said, pointing up at an image of Marine Le Pen gazing grandly from a prominent office window. Ms Le Pen’s far-right National Front (FN) won the European elections in France, as did the United Kingdom Independence Party in Britain. Other Eurosceptic parties did well elsewhere. Dissatisfaction with the European Union dates back at least to 1992, when French voters registered their petit oui of 51% in a referendum on the Maastricht treaty. Across the EU, public support for the union has fallen from 65% to 50% since. But the second phase of discontent came in the form of new (or revived) populist parties. Outfits opposed to immigration or euro-zone bail-outs began to flourish in northern Europe around five years ago. (One of them, Timo Soini’s Finns party, entered government in Finland this week. ) More recently anti-austerity parties have emerged in the south—including the leftist Syriza, which has led the Greek government for four troubled months. Many still hope the populist threat will fade. Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, thinks he can ride to re-election later this year on the back of an economic recovery, despite the pounding that his Popular Party (PP) took at regional and local elections this week. Mr Rajoy’s optimism, which not everybody in his party shares, is partly inspired by the success of the Conservatives in seeing off UKIP at the British general election. Indeed, UKIP’s single-seat flop, as well as Ms Le Pen’s recent quarrel with her father, the FN’s founder, have led some to suggest that Europe’s populist moment has passed. UKIP’s showing said more about Britain’s electoral system than about its own failings, and the FN feud could yet help Ms Le Pen by distancing her from her father’s toxic and outdated politics. Fractious, amateurish and often over-reliant on a charismatic leader, some populist parties may melt away once they try their hand at governance. (It will be fascinating to watch Mr Soini grapple with the compromises of coalition. ) But others have shown staying power. Geert Wilders’s Party for Freedom is now part of the political furniture in the Netherlands, after a. Source: www.economist.com
